Meal Plan Monday {Plus Grocery Voyeur} ~ 8.15.11

Sunday was my first attempt at bi-weekly grocery shopping.  And I have to admit, so far I’m not a fan.  But ask me again next weekend when I theoretically don’t have to go to the store.

I went to three grocery stores yesterday.  Two in the morning and one after nap.  So I grocery shopped all day.  Which I’m kinda irritated by because it was a gorgeous day.  And I spent it schlepping grocery bags and a cranky toddler.

But I *should* have enough food to last us two weeks.  And that’s kinda awesome.

And for you voyeurs that like to see shopping trips, I actually took pictures of my haul.

First up Trader Joe’s.  I only go there every two weeks as it is because we buy their canned cat food.  But there are several other things that we like there, too.

Number 1 item we have to purchase every. single. time?  Cereal bars.  Because Allison cries for them if we run out.  They are pretty good, but still kid.  Kinda ridiculous.

I also like their bagels because the ones at the regular grocery are full of all kinds of crap.  I splurged on the cookies.  And you can’t get goat cheese at a better price anywhere else.

For meat and bread, I went to Dierbergs this week because they had london broils and beef roasts for $4.49/lb.  I know that’s not a great price, but it’s better than usual.  And we don’t usually get cuts of beef, but I learned how to make Matt’s grandma’s pot roast on vacation and wanted to try it now that the weather is a little cooler.

Also staples at the regular store?  Arnold bread.  It’s my favorite no HFCS brand.  Also orange juice.  Because the cheap crap is…  well, crap.  I also got some Langer cranberry juice for $1.50 per bottle.  I don’t really drink much juice, but Matt requires it for survival.  And a little oj with my pancakes is nice on the weekend.

Final stop was Aldi for the basics.  They really do have the best prices on milk, cheese, chips, crackers, frozen fish, and sometimes even produce.  Oh and M&Ms.  Which have become a necessity for a potty training child.

Here’s hoping that this lasts two weeks because I spent the rest of the month’s budget for food yesterday.  I don’t have the exact total but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $115.  Which seems a little high, but I guess I normally spend about $50-$60 per week.  And I did make a couple splurges.

Here’s the plan for the week:

Breakfasts will consist of cereal bars, yogurt, cold cereal, fruit, bagels, frozen TJ’s waffles, and frozen homemade french toast.

Lunches are usually leftovers or pb&js.  Or cheese and crackers.  Allison eats a lot of cheese and crackers.

Snacks are always mostly fruit although I did cook some edamame for Allison.  Oh, and more cheese and crackers.

And then there’s dinner…

Monday:  Baked Sweet Potatoes

Tuesday:  Crock Pot BBQ Chicken, Frozen Green Beans, Buttermilk Biscuits

Wednesday:  Beef Fajitas, Grilled Peppers and Onions, Beans

Thursday:  BLT Pasta Salad (which I’ve yet to draft a recipe for…)

Friday:  Food Truck Friday
