Food Waste Friday | The Shame

Whenever I have a good food waste week, it’s inevitable that the following week will be atrocious.  Case in point: Last week, one questionable box of beef stock.  This week, half the contents in the fridge.

Okay, so it wasn’t quite that bad.

From the top…  The attempt at cauliflower crust pizza, one lone moldy corn tortilla, a smidge of whipped cream, leftover Hoppin’ Juan, and some edamame.

I can’t say I was too broken up about most of it.  The pizza was just “Meh” and the Hoppin’ Juan was alright but after eating on the enormous container for two weeks, I figured it had run it’s course.  There wasn’t enough whipped cream to really do anything with and the last tortilla was torn.

I was a little disappointed about the edamame, though.  I will thaw out a bunch for Allison to have for snacks, but they always seem to get overlooked.

Oh, and then there was this.

I pulled out the peas to serve with dinner Wednesday night and they looked a little slimy.  I rinsed them off, thinking that would fix the problem, but they just didn’t taste right, so into the compost they went.

The good news is that everything in my fridge is current.  Well, except for maybe that chicken stock that I’ve been procrastinating on using…  Gotta leave something for next week’s report, right?!

  1. Now that you say that, I realize I have the exact same problem!!! I think it’s because I go all crazy one week trying to cook up food that is moving in the “questionable” direction…then I have all these leftovers from all the waste-preventing food I cooked. :) Great observation!

So glad I’m not the only one who often has questionable food items in their fridge!

Ugh! This week I pulled out a jar of yogurt that I had forgotten about, as well as a large container of pumpkin and some sweet potatoes. Throwing out all that food makes me so aggravated! I’m thinking about making a list that I can update everytime I put something in the fridge…

When our fridge gets too full I make a list on our kitchen chalkboard. It does really help because I’m not home all day to push leftovers.

  4. Cauliflower pizza crust–now that’s an interesting idea. Good luck next week.

Slimy peas cannot be good… Non-slimy peas aren’t good! 😉 lol!

I probably would’ve just eaten the whipped cream on it’s own..but I really really like whipped cream. 😉 I also had a pretty bad week- I think that it’s true that you can’t have two great weeks in a row! Maybe next week we can do better?

    • Jen says:

You know how whipped cream gets all runny after awhile? Yeah, it wasn’t good eatin’.

I’m already a little worried about this week. I’m just busy (read: lazy) and don’t even know what’s in there right now.
