Food Waste Friday | Leftovers

Oh, another crappy cell phone pic for Food Waste Friday…  I turned off my alarm this morning, fell back asleep, and woke up a half hour late so was in a bit of a hurry this morning.  I was actually even so short on time that I put these leftovers BACK in the fridge so that my mother-in-law/nanny wouldn’t dispose of them.  God bless that woman for all that she does for us, but she does not need to be dealing with my rotten food.

I was told that these leftovers are no longer fit for human consumption because they had been sitting in the fridge for about two weeks.  I will say I smelled the soup  and it didn’t appear off in any way, but honestly, if it’s been sitting in the fridge for that long already, what are the chances that it will be eaten now?  Not good.

Same goes for the butternut squash quinoa stew on the bottom.  It was good, but not great when it was made originally in December.  So when I pulled the leftovers from the freezer, I already wasn’t excited about eating it.  So out of that huge container, I’ve had two servings and barely touched it at lunch yesterday.  As sad as that makes me, I guess it’s time to cut my losses.

The top item is half a serving of a chicken broccoli rice casserole that I’ve been recipe testing.  This was trial 2, but it still wasn’t stellar either.  So I ate half of it then it sat.

I did also compost a slightly moldy lime, but that was my only produce waste this week.  I guess that’s improvement!

How do you avoid mediocre leftover waste?

  1. It’s good to know when to cut your losses. To actually get the stuff out before it is gross to look at and smell.

It’s always an emotional struggle because I don’t want to waste, but I like to eat good food. And I’m never satisfied if I don’t enjoy the food, so I end up eating something else afterwards anyway. That’s not exactly frugal.

I have read somewhere to never put limes in the compost.

  3. I cleaned out my fridge yesterday and I swear, sometimes I want to cry over the shit I throw out…
    such waste..sigh

I try to meal plan in nights for leftovers, but if it’s unappealing to begin with, they never really work.

That stinks when you have leftovers that just don’t want to get eaten. I had a few leftover items this week go bad as well.

We are wasting so much food in our house as well. As no one wants to eat it – We are just trying to cook less.
