Meal Plan Monday {Plus Grocery Voyeur} ~ 3.12.12

Alternate Title: The Week That is Trying To Kill Me

If someone had told me several years ago that hosting a birthday party for a 3-year-old would be similar to the chaos that ensues the week before Christmas, I’d have laughed in their face.  But folks, THIS IS REAL.

I have successfully taken something so simple as a child’s rainbow theme birthday party and created the most complicated, intricate party planned in history.  FOR A 3 YEAR OLD.  I’m not kidding.  Rainbow flavored cupcakes are killing me.  As is homemade frozen yogurt, homemade rainbow soap, and the mesh goodie bags that I have actually yet to buy the supplies to make.  Because I couldn’t possibly just give out pre-made goodie bags with random plastic crap.  That would be too EASY.

In an effort to save a *little* of my sanity and stave off a Crohn’s attack for another week, I am postponing all non-essential tasks.  This includes, but is not limited to, standard food prep, regrouting the tile, starting seeds, budgeting, and enjoying life.  It’s 78° today and I’ll be stuck inside dying glycerin soap.  All I can say is it better turn out better than the trial run of the cupcakes or I’m gonna lose it.

So there will be VERY easy meals planned for this week.  Which is actually more challenging to plan than I thought it would be.  Apparently, I only make complicated meals.  You’re shocked, I KNOW.

Sunday:  Steak Fajitas (bumped from last week)

Monday:  Sloppy Joes, Frozen Veg

Tuesday:  Veggie Fried Rice

Wednesday:  Leftovers

Thursday:  Dinner with Friends

Friday:  Mac ‘n Cheese, Peas

Saturday:  Corned Beef and Cabbage (a tradition in my house)

This weekend was also a grocery shopping weekend, and I decided to do all the party food shopping at the same time.  Big mistake.

Here is my Aldi haul.

I just couldn’t muster the strength to arrange the groceries for a real photo, so here’s a crappy iPhone pic.

I spent $78.17.  Which is almost double what I normally spend.  But there were 7 bags of chips, and tons of sugar, and four bags of spinach…

Then I went to Trader Joe’s the next day and spent $46.35 for stuff that wasn’t even really party related.  And managed to forget our staple breakfast of cereal bars.  I blame the store because I went to a different location and everything is arranged differently and it was super busy.  (Mental Note: It’s totally worth driving 15 minutes out of my way to go to the bigger, quieter store.)

Lastly, I stopped at the farmer’s market for eggs and tomatoes and spent $16.78.  Not bad, but I didn’t buy enough eggs.  I had written down 3 dozen, but when I was loading up the cart, I second guessed myself and just went with the two.  And now I’m kicking myself.

Not to mention that we are now out of honey and will be out of bananas within two days.  And we’ve already spent our grocery budget and then some.  Plus we still have to go to the regular grocery to pick up lunch meat and bread for the actual party.

I will say that I didn’t go into this party planning particularly organized.  I didn’t have a set budget or even a vague idea of how complicated I was making things.  That’s the problem with planning this from the confines of your work cubicle.  You have plenty of time to dream but little to actually do.  And it can be hard to guesstimate the amount of time/effort/money required.

I’m going to try my best to get a grip today so that I can continue the party prep in a *slightly* more organized fashion.  But if you don’t hear from me much this week, you can assume I have been forced to take to my bed for a while and I’ll be back sometime next week after I’ve recovered from the anxiety attack brought on by making 8 different flavored cakes.

Wish me luck,

Jen
