Meal Plan Monday {Plus Grocery Voyeur} ~ 3.26.12

I’m finally feeling like life is getting a little back to normal.  Vacation is always nice, but I am a creature of habit and changes in my routine throw me off my game.

Add in the recovery period from Allison’s birthday party and I’m slowly getting the house back in order.  There are floors to be mopped this week, prep cooking to be done, and then there’s also the veggie garden to be tended to.  Oh yeah, and the millions of dollars we went over budget this month.

In an effort to counteract some of our {read: my} overspending this month, I slashed the grocery budget.  I typically allow $120 every two weeks for food, but this time I only gave myself $60.  We do have a rather substantial amount of food in the house, plus leftovers from the party, so I’m thinking we should be able to get by on the basics for the next couple weeks.

I spent $14.88 at the farmer’s market on eggs, bread, tomatoes, local ground pork, and some seed potatoes and onion sets for the garden.  The rest came from Aldi.  $46.40 worth.  Perhaps I bought a few non-necessities, but I’m still under budget by a few cents because there were a couple bucks in the grocery envelope from last payday.  I was hoping to still go to Schnucks or Trader Joes this period, but I guess that’s going to be scaled back.  Although, there will be a trip to use a $2 coupon that expires on Friday and Matt’s been hankering for some lunch meat lately.

I’m pretty excited about meals this week.  We are reviving some old favorites as well as trying some new things.

Sunday:  Deep Dish Pizza

Monday:  Leftovers

Tuesday:  Game night with neighbors – dinner to be provided

Wednesday:  Beef Stroganoff, Egg Noodles, Peas

Thursday:  Spicy Grilled Tilapia, Mexican Slaw, Rice

Friday:  Brinner

Saturday:  TBD  (I have a whole chicken that I’d like to use, but am kinda tired of crock pot chicken.  We’ll see if I get around to butchering it.)

What’s going on in your kitchen this week?

It’s not too hard if you don’t buy meat. We have some steaks and a whole chicken in the freezer, so that should get us through.
